Today MAY 13: OUR LADY OF FATIMA
OUR LADY OF FATIMA
O most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the most holy Rosary you were pleased to appear to the children of Fatima and reveal a glorious message. We implored you, inspire in our hearts a fervent love for the recitation of the Rosary. By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption that are recalled therein, may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask, through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.
Our Lady asked that the following prayer be inserted after each decade of the Rosary:
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins; save us from the res of hell; lead all souls into Heaven, especially those who are in most need of thy mercy.
There are three ways to obtain the indulgence, detailed in a statement from the Fatima Shrine in Portugal (see below).
To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: go to Confession and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.
1. Make a pilgrimage to the Shrine in Fatima, Portugal
To the faithful who make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal and participate in a celebration of prayer dedicated to the Virgin. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke the Mother of God.
2. Pray before any statue of Our Lady of Fatima
To the faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima.
3. The elderly and infirm
To the faithful who, because of age, illness or other serious cause, are unable to get around, may pray in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparitions, the 13th of each month. They must also “offer to merciful God with confidence, through Mary, their prayers and sufferings or the sacrifices they make in their own lives.”(1)
May the Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, strengthen our faith, sustain our hope and ignite our charity.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA
The story of Fatima begins with three humble shepherd children. Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta lived quiet lives. They tended their sheep and enjoyed playing games together. They were ordinary children, who took part in an extraordinary event.
In 1917, in a series of apparitions, Our Blessed Mother appeared to the three shepherd children. On October 13, 1917 about 70,000 people gathered in the pouring rain because Our Blessed Mother promised the children a miracle would take place as a sign of her messages to them. During the apparition, the rain stopped and the clouds parted. The spectators could view the sun without discomfort. They saw the sun whirl and dance. Prior to the Miracle of the Sun, the spectators were drenched with rain. After the sun became still, they were completely dry.
During each of the apparitions Our Lady told the children of the importance of prayer and penance, especially during troubled times. Her message has often been interpreted in light of the devastating world wars which broke out soon after her appearance. Today, considering the recent attacks against the United States, and the retaliatory strikes launched last week, Our Lady’s words seem especially apt once again.
